Mission Hills, perched above Old Town and Mission Valley and overlooking San Diego Bay, is one of San Diego’s oldest, finest, and most well-preserved neighborhoods.
Development dates back to the late 1800’s, when Captain Henry Johnston used the area he called Inspiration Point to guide his ship, the SS Orizaba, into San Diego Harbor. He later purchased that land, and in 1887 his daughter built Villa Orizaba – the first home in what is now Mission Hills.
The area soon gained favor with well-to-do San Diego residents, who built in a variety of styles ranging from Craftsman Bungalow, to Prairie Homes, and Spanish and Mission Revival. Many of the houses for sale in Mission Hills qualify for the Mills Act – a property tax reduction for owners who preserve the historical integrity of their homes.
Visitors describe driving into Mission Hills, with its quiet tree-lined streets, lush landscaping, and winding canyons, as entering an oasis. And yet, its location and easy access to transportation puts residents within minutes from all that San Diego has to offer.
Along with its elegant homes, Mission Hills includes a thriving business district whose proprietors join in promoting the strong sense of community. One of those businesses, Mission Hills Nursery, was founded in 1910 by Kate Sessions, the landscape artist and horticulturist for Balboa Park. We think she’d have been pleased to know that now, more than 100 years later, her nursery is still thriving and remains a gathering point for community gardeners.
Each Wednesday, from 3-7 p.m. residents can shop, dine, and socialize at the Mission Hills Farmer’s Market. This weekly market brings residents the finest in fresh produce and flowers, along with local honey and gourmet packaged products. The dining choices offer something for everyone from vegans to omnivores, and health food advocates to “sugar babies.”
Multiple annual events include the Mission Hills Community Garage Sale in April and the BBQ Competition held during the 4th of July Celebration in Pioneer Park.
